Some pictures and thoughts from my time away. (The most recent post appears first--to read chronologically, you'll have to start at the end and work your way back.)

The P.E.A.C.E. Plan

Someone gave Rwandan President Paul Kagame a copy of The Purpose Driven Life several years ago. After reading it, President Kagame invited Rick Warren to visit Rwanda and asked him to consider helping Rwanda to become a purpose driven country. The P.E.A.C.E. Plan emerged as Rick was prayerfully considering the offer.

You can read a fuller description of The P.E.A.C.E. Plan at http://www.thepeaceplan.com  There was an article in USA Today on Tuesday about how the P.E.A.C.E. Plan is working in Rwanda. You can find it at http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-07-21-rwanda_N.htm

To attack the five Global Giants (Spiritual Emptiness, Self-Serving Leadership, Extreme Poverty, Pandemic Diseases, Rampant Illiteracy), Rick Warren proposed the P.E.A.C.E. Plan:

P – Promote reconciliation
E – Equip leaders
A – Assist the poor
C – Care for the sick
E – Educate the next generation

The implementation of the Plan is the task of small groups, first from Saddleback and eventually from other churches like Northminster. The idea is that small groups from the U.S. will connect with a church in Rwanda to establish relationships and tackle the global giants.

Several of us from Northminster took the P.E.A.C.E training in February 2007 (sponsored by the Virginia Baptist Mission Board). I traveled to Rwanda to see how for myself how The P.E.A.C.E. Plan is working.
